Yeah Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were two jazz afficiandos skilled enough to bring their quirky, intellectual insight into hit pop-rock radio staples. A 1972 blast from the past, Do It Again sounds as modern and captivating as ever.

@@tommyk6719”intelligent rock” is not a genre. Steely Dan music is of their own genre. Santana, Pablo Cruise, CSNY, none of them are like Steely Dan despite having elements of Dan’s style within their music… or better said, Steely Dan having elements of the aforementioned bands in their own music. Steely Dan is not “just: …. Blah blah blah”, they’re a genre onto themselves.
Steely Dan is one of the few, rare bands that flipped all expectations of what progressive rock is supposed to be. Instead of writing long, epic songs with heavy keyboards and classical influences, they incorporated elements of jazz and melodic pop into a unique musical experience. In addition to their musicianship, they were also meticulous about their production values in the studio, which is why their catalog is revered among audiophiles worldwide. Great reaction! And you're only beginning. The album 'Aja' is a true masterpiece.
Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were known to, once they got a sound in their collective head had actually been known to occasionally spend a whole day of studio time trying to find it. When the day was done, and everybody went home. they called in a whole new group of musicians to come in the next day and see what they could do with it. Unfortunately we lost Walter a few years back but Donald is still playing
You are right, the beat never changed, but by doing both a sitar solo and an organ solo on top of the beat, it sounds active and moving. This was their very first track on their very first album, and it was a surprise huge hit.
As a teenager in the 70s, Steely Dan was just awesome, and still is!! Timeless, distinctive music, so relevant today. We just don't have this quality of music now, really miss these bands!! Loved listening to this music on my cassette player in my car, especially when driving longer distances to college.
First song I ever heard by this group was on the radio, and it was Reelin' In The Years, which I thought was great! It's a good song to listen to, as is Peg. Simple name. Rikki Don't Lose That Number is good, too. Thanks for your usual good choice of songs to try out, and God bless you!
"Do It Again" by Steely Dan and "The Remembering" by YES inspired me to buy an electric sitar for Christmas one year. I haven't played it in years now...I have tingling in my fingers and can't really feel the strings anymore. My sitar, acoustic guitar, Les Paul, and bass guitar are retired now.
It is not a real sitar. It is a special (6 string) electric guitar created to sound like a sitar made by Danelectro. It is tuned as a "guitar" so it is easy for guitar players to play... vs. A Sitar, which is completely different- in tuning, strings, bridge, everything. Danelectro made electric basses and guitars and was popular in Britain.
Highly recommended by Steely Dan: Black Cow, Dr Wu, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, FM, Green Earrings, Kid Charlemagne, Peg, West of Hollywood, Aja, Home at Last, Babylon Sisters, Glamour Profession, Don't Take Me Alive, Haitian Divorce, Caves of Altamira, Bad Sneakers, Chain Lightning, Your Gold Teeth, Pretzel Logic, Everything Must Go, Almost Gothic, Lunch With Gina, Your Gold Teeth II, Your Gold Teeth I, Bodhisattva, Only a Fool Would Say that, Reelin in the Years, Pretzel Logic, Time Out of Mind, Hey 19, Jack of Speed, Pixeleen, Razor Boy. You cannot LOSE!
To this day the Aja album is my test music for any speakers or headphones I'm considering. They were such perfectionists that they complained multiple times about the Katy Lied album as they felt the compression on the finished product was "off".

It is nice to see that The Dan's ability to cause spontaneous dancing has not diminished over time. My friends and I had the same reaction the first time around, way back in the day.
Debut album, glad you go the request. So glad was there when the Dan came out, yes have my vinyl. Gratifying to see you, Airplay Beats so many other react channels discover this great band.

One of the deepest rabbit holes you can find. Steely Dan is its own genre, because they blended styles like no one ever had before or since. No one’s ever tried to sound like them because it’s not possible. This is one of the first 2 albums I ever bought for myself in 1973, when I was 14.

Oh wow Steely Dan ! In 1990 my wife and I emigrated from UK to Australia. We stopped off on the way in Hawaii for 1 week holiday to break the journey. We rented a Pontiac Firebird 2 seater convertible sports car for the week and almost every day we would drive from Waikiki to the north shore to Sunset Surf Beach . The only cassette tape we had with us was a Steely Dan compilation which we played over and over in the car for the whole week. Ever since, for over 30 years, whenever I hear Steely Dan, it takes me straight back to Oahu, Hawaii, 1990, driving through the pineapple plantation in a beautiful red convertible with the top down, with my gorgeous young wife, ray bans on, music blaring, to the surf beach on the other side of the island. It was the best time in my life, very happy memories ! It’s amazing how music does that huh ! 😀❤
Steely Dan was primarily two guys who used a turnstile of the best of the best studio musicians from album to album, and even song to song. Best drummers, best guitarists, often having several play the part before the selected the best one they liked. Endlessly replaying several takes before mixing. A fusion of jazz and rock with some excellent lyrics.
Can’t Buy A Thrill is one of the most underrated albums ever. If I was told I could only listen to one album for the rest of my life, it would be this album.

Their Album "Aja" is considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of all time. It's up there with Led Zep 4 and Boston's first and there is nothing "Rocking" about it. Just a tremendous listening experience. A little jazzy, RnB, some south of the border and rock elements, Pop and their own special "sauce." Take a listen with us.
I always thought of Steely Dan as the first (and arguably the best) jazz-rock fusion band, which definitely was a trend during the '70's and beyond. Jeff Beck, for example, took up the jazz-rock fusion genre (see Blow By Blow and Wired albums).
Steely Dan were one of the most talented, eclectic rock groups ever. Steeped in jazz as it's founding members were, it could be classified as jazz-rock but ultimately, the band is one of those few groups that defy categorization. "Do It Again" is ultimately about addiction. Looking forward to seeing you listen to more of these guys. Some the best guitar solos by a number of different guitarists can heard in their music. Stay safe.
Steely Dan is huge rabbit hole. Buckle up they have so many bangers that it's beyond ridiculous. And the level of the songwriting, production and musicianship is insane. I highly recommend anything from their first two albums Can't Buy a Thrill and Countdown to Ecstasy and anything from The Royal Scam and Aja to begin with.
Hi, great reaction! You should know that these guy´s are/were perfectionists and used to bring in the top notch session musicians available at the time on each of their records, even if this is an early one. Jazz harmonies, pop and soul arrangements and jazz/fusion musicians combined. It does not get better! Check out Peg, Josie and Kid Charlemange among others. As someone wrote earlier, it is a rabbit hole ... 🙂
Denny Dias solo on the Sitar! 1972 Indian Sitar music and Transcendental Meditation were the trend in Rock music... Ravi Shankar played at Woodstock in 1969
They were an actual band for the first 3 albums, after that it was just Donald Fagen and Walter Becker writing incredible songs and bringing in a plethora of ace studio assassins to record them. Fagen and Becker were notoriously demanding of always getting it to sound just right to their ears. One person in the music industry once dubbed them the "...Manson and Starkweather of rock and roll..." That meaning Charles Manson, whom I assume you have heard of,and Charles Starkweather, who was an infamous mass murderer of the same time period. So,yeah, they weren't the most cuddly dudes in the industry, haha. That solo you were trying to place the sound of,it was done by Fagen on a Yamaha YC-30 organ with a sliding pitch control. The "guitar solo" was actually an electric sitar played by Denny Dias. The Dan are all over the place musically, but they always find their way back to jazz elements,as Fagen and Becker both considered Dave Brubeck to be a huge influence.
Saw them in concert in 1975 in Michigan. Best performance I ever saw! They did three encores and the crowd went wild. Later they were spotted in a local 24-hour coffee shop. I was so pissed I missed them.
Thanks for this! You guys are great - You are right about the smoothness of Steely Dan. If you ranked all the bands by "smoothness," they are top 5. Dire Straits is mostly a smooth sounding band. Doobie Brothers, too, but they are more upbeat.
Please do a presentation of Steely Dan, "FM" - a 1977 soundtrack hit from the movie "FM." Its a sophisticated and funk rhythm filled Jazz-Rock composition with gloriously cinematic instrumental arranging and Donald Fagen's interesting take on how modern radio affects popular culture.
So "The Dan" as they are referred to, are Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, they brought in several different musicians for all their songs and albums, all top notch killers at the time. To play on a Steely Dan song/album is quite the accomplishment.
It never ceases to amaze me how hip and cool this song still sounds after 52 years, to every generation.
Yeah Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were two jazz afficiandos skilled enough to bring their quirky, intellectual insight into hit pop-rock radio staples. A 1972 blast from the past, Do It Again sounds as modern and captivating as ever.
